Information about the above
Zimele is our enterprise development initiative which we established in 1989 as a catalyst to develop emerging black business, to empower entrepreneurs and to facilitate job creation. Zimele consists of a network of business hubs/walk-in centres nationally and enables entrepreneurs and SMEs to access business assistance facilities, knowledge, finance, mentorship and support.
Zimele is recognised internationally as a best practice model in supporting SMEs as it enables them to operate within the economy through a mixture of financial support and mentorship. The initiative has won many awards including the inaugural Forging Enterprise Small Business Promotion Pioneer Award.
Creating shared value by identifying and developing partnerships is one of the instrumental practices for driving our business goals. Leveraging these partnerships enables Anglo American to create social and economic value for communities, and also to address immediate needs and challenges.
One of these partnerships is the Sebenza Fund which has been designed to foster the potential of local entrepreneurs to build local capacity and ensure that the local economy is able to deliver opportunities that can extend beyond mining. With R500 million being made available to assist entrepreneurs through an equal partnership between Anglo American and National Treasury, it focusses on high impact sustainable job creation.
Since 2008, up to the end of 2015, Zimele’s has provided R1.6 billion in funding for 2,202 small businesses that collectively employed over 46,000 people. This further generated a total turnover of R8.1 billion.
