The Woolworths Enterprise Development (ED) programme has been designed primarily to support emerging small and medium sized business in the Woolworths supply chain. This is used as a tool to remove barriers of entry into our supply chain for small, medium, black and black women- owned enterprises.
HERE ARE A FEW OF THE PROJECTS WE'RE WORKING ON:
- Inspired Leaf:
Inspired Leaf, owned by Jimmy Botha supplies Woolworths with baby spinach, rocket, wild rocket and basil .. Ten years ago, a former telecommunications worker followed his dream to become a farmer. He joined the Woolworths Enterprise and Supplier Development programme in 2013, and with financial assistance from Woolworths along with mentorship and investment from neighbouring farmers has been able to expand his operations and become a Woolworths Farming For Future supplier. He currently offers permanent employment to 42 people and provides 30 jobs for seasonal workers. - Middle Sky:
We’ve heard of free range and organic eggs at Woolworths but have you heard of ‘indigenous’ eggs? Indigenous’ eggs are laid by ‘indigenous’ hens produced by a local farmer Dr Ruben Mahlare in Bela Bela. These bosveld hens are a cross breed between three African breeds and are fed on a vegetarian diet supplemented by Lucerne grown by Ruben’s wife as a special treat.
Middle sky became part of the Woolworths Supplier and Enterprise Development programme in 2014. With the help of a loan received from Woolworths, Reuben was able to grow his number of hens, upgrade his packing area and purchase a truck to transport his eggs. Middle sky now has 10,000 birds and supplies Woolworths nationally with grade 1 eggs packaged as ‘Mixed egg 6 pack’
