• ABB Karebo Manufacturers – a joint venture between ABB
South Africa and Karebo Investment Holdings, a black-owned
engineering company, with 40% of the equity – in 2000
became the first BEE company to be awarded the ISO 14001
and ISO 9002 certification in the field of electrical engineering
in South Africa.
• ABB Kutlwanong (Kutlwanong is the South Sotho word for
working together or common understanding) formed in 2001,
is the first plastic injection moulding company run and jointly owned
by black people. ABB Kutlwanong is situated at
Botshabelo in the Free State. It makes plastic enclosures and
other plastic products for Eskom, Telkom, municipalities and
manufacturing firms.
• In August 2001 ABB South Africa acquired Power Engineers,
a distribution transformer business, which was subsequently
transferred to ABB Powertech Transformers, and, in turn,
incorporated into Desta Power Matla, a BEE company, which
manufactures distribution transformers, partly owned by
both ABB and Powertech.
• ABB has entered into a unique social contract with the
Mbuyane community in Mpumalanga, in terms of which a
community trust has taken a 10% stake in the R350 million
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport that ABB is
developing. The community will also get a fixed fee for each
passenger that departs from the airport. With 200 000
passengers a year expected to use the airport, the Mbuyane
community could earn significant income to spend on social
upliftment projects.
