Since its inception in 2011, Massmart’s Supplier Development programme, an investment worth R242m towards developing Massmart’s South African-based small suppliers that are either black-owned, black-empowered or local manufacturers of products continues to make headway and has to date deployed funding to 183 black-owned suppliers to the Group. The fund supports suppliers in agriculture and manufacturing.
In addition Massmart has established a R200 million Supplier Development Fund, to assist South African small, micro and medium -sized businesses, who are either existing or potential suppliers to Massmart. The Fund is implemented over five years (2012 to 2017). The Fund targets all established local manufacturers, producers and significant assemblers of products that can be resold in the Massmart retail divisions. Preference but not exclusivity is given to black-owned and women-owned businesses. The purpose of the Supplier Development Fund is to assist suppliers to enhance the quality of their products or improve their production capacity.
